The Sumter County Historical Society continues
to work to follow the aims established when the Society began.
To that end in 2015, The Society actively began to develop
a plan for making improvements and maintenance of the Thomas
Sumter gravesite. We have applied for a grant and have coordinated
with Thomas Sumter Academy for an ongoing program of general
upkeep of the site.
Membership dues also enable us to fund a
$1000 scholarship, as well as monetary awards on Student Recognition
Night to students competing in our essay contest.
projects in the past included funding the restoration of the
oil portrait of the sister of Angelica Singleton Van Buren,
Videau Singleton Deveaux, who with her husband purchased “The
Ruins,” a local historic home in 1838. We make efforts
to hold meetings on site at historic locations, of which there
are many in the Sumter area. Come join us and learn about Sumter
February 5, 2017 Noted Civil War author Pat
McNeely will speak on her latest book about the burning
of Columbia with a new twist.
Future meeting speakers
will include John Duffie who grandfather was the first
superintendent for Sumter schools.
In addition, there
is the continued work on the Tomb of Thomas Sumter.
