The Sumter County Historical Society continues to work to follow the aims established when the Society began. To that end in 2015, The Society actively began to develop a plan for making improvements and maintenance of the Thomas Sumter gravesite. We have applied for a grant and have coordinated with Thomas Sumter Academy for an ongoing program of general upkeep of the site.

Membership dues also enable us to fund a $1000 scholarship, as well as monetary awards on Student Recognition Night to students competing in our essay contest.

Important projects in the past included funding the restoration of the oil portrait of the sister of Angelica Singleton Van Buren, Videau Singleton Deveaux, who with her husband purchased “The Ruins,” a local historic home in 1838. We make efforts to hold meetings on site at historic locations, of which there are many in the Sumter area. Come join us and learn about Sumter County.
